While the Magnificent Seven gymnasts from the 1996
Olympics were in town, Special Olympics Illinois athlete Marc Janovics performed at an event in their honor hosted by Olympic gold medalist and Special Olympics International Board Member Bart Conner at Chicago's Union Station. Of the 100 or so elite gymnasts invited to perform, Marc was the only Special Olympics athlete among them.
Coalition Condemns Movie
Special Olympics has joined forces with national disability organizations to condemn the movie “Tropic Thunder” to be released this week. “The content of ‘Tropic Thunder’ provides a platform for society to be made conscious of how hurtful the word ‘retard’ can be – even if not directed at people with intellectual disabilities,” said Doug Snyder, President & CEO of Special Olympics Illinois.

Inspire Greatness Gala
On July 19, Special Olympics Illinois celebrated the 40th anniversary of the first Special Olympics Games, which occurred in 1968 at Soldier Field in Chicago, and the beginning of a global movement by hosting the inaugural Inspire Greatness Gala in the International Ballroom at the Hilton Chicago.
