Athletes

Special Olympics Illinois athletes range in age from 8 to over 90. They come from every part of the state and from every economic group. They all have this thing in common – the desire to do their best and have fun at the same time.

All the programs offered in Illinois provide athletes with the chance to develop physical fitness, sports skills, social skills and self-esteem. Athletes train for a minimum of eight weeks and compete locally before advancing to the next level of competition. Seven state tournaments, including Summer and Winter Games, allow the athletes to show their skills.

Children and adults with intellectual disabilities who participate in Special Olympics develop improved physical fitness and motor skills, greater self-confidence and a more positive self-image. They grow mentally, socially and spiritually and, through their activities, exhibit boundless courage and enthusiasm, enjoy the rewards of friendship and ultimately discover not only new abilities and talents but “their voices” as well.
